Amazing & Beautiful Sights We Saw In Poland!

The beautiful sights we saw in Poland will stay with us a lifetime! In this post, we will share our memories of Poland with you! This short trip took these two traveling seniors to the beautiful village of Korycin, Poland for a Polish wedding of our good friends Ania & Mondo! They invited us & of course we said yes!

A Wedding in Poland!

Our friends, Mondo & Ania were flying back to Poland – to her home village in Korycin – for a traditional Polish wedding for her family & friends who were not able to attend intimate civil ceremony in the U.S. There was no hesitation on our part when they asked if we would come to their wedding in Poland! One – we LOVE them and think the world of them & Two – another country we can mark off our list! Here’s how it went down!

The setting of the wedding was in Ania’s home village of Korycin [pop. of around 530+/-] in northeast Poland where her family still lived.  The wedding was a couple months away & I can’t even imagine the hoops & headaches that they went thru to get this wedding planned between two continents. While the bride’s family was planning the huge wedding, we had to get our travel plans together as well!

The bride could not have picked a better date for the wedding. Visiting Poland in May is considered to be one of the best months to see Poland as the weather is warming up from winter plus you are in low season! [Remember low season means lower prices.] Thankfully, there was only a slight shower on a day prior to the wedding.

Dark Skin in Poland?

Landing in Warsaw we honestly were not sure or accepting the Polish locals would be of dark skin in Poland. For the first two days/nights in Warsaw we spent walking & seeing the sights. Let me add that Ania had a serious discussion with The Big Guy when they invited us to the wedding. Ania told The Big Guy that in Korycin the people had only seen dark skinned people on the television. She was concerned that the people might stare at him & not know how to act around him. The Big Guy eased her concerns by letting her know that he had traveled to destinations similar to her city. I think she was more concerned than us.

Once we arrived at our hotel in Warsaw, Poland, we decided to take a walk & checkout the area for a market & places to eat later.  On our walk an older lady walked past us, turned around & started walking back-wards facing us with this huge smile on her face. She was chuckling and clapping her hands. The Big Guy and I just smiled back at her & waved. She was so excited to see us & gave us a BIG Thumbs Up! This little lady eased whatever tensions we may have had for the balance of the trip.

Huge Faux Pas

Our faux pas as a tourist in Poland happened shortly after we left the little lady waving to us. We had found a grocer & picked up some fresh fruit & a bottle of wine for later. Seriously, we pride ourselves on being one with the people in whatever country we are visiting but we totally took a dive on this trip.  We made it to the checkout line, paid for our groceries & waited for cashier to put items in a bag. We quickly realized, once she continued ringing up next customer, that we should have had our own bag & we were responsible for bagging our own groceries. It seemed we had caused a little bit of a hold up in line. Oops! The Big Guy & I couldn’t help but laugh at how “tourist” we must have looked as we grabbed our few groceries & juggled them back to hotel laughing at ourselves – tourists! LOL!

Train Ride to Bialystok

On our third day in Poland, we were scheduled to move from our Warsaw hotel to a small village hotel in Korycin for the wedding which was scheduled for the following day. We would take the train to Bialystok, Poland where Ania’s brother, Jacek, would be picking us up for our final destination, Korycin.

A Little Polish History

While waiting to board, we met a fascinating young man, Tomasz P. He made sure we were getting on the right train & ‘looked” after us until we boarded.  Then he made a trip to our car to be sure we were comfortable.  We invited him to sit with us & the two-plus hour train ride flew by. Tomasz educated us on Poland & the effects of Russian occupation. He so openly shared with us some of the things his Jewish grandparents & parents had seen & how they had been affected by Germans as well as Russian occupation.

One of the amazing locals we in Poland.

The Big Guy & Tomasz still stay in touch.

Poland was under communist rule until 1989 & their influence can be seen in the village of Korycin.  As we walked, houses were pointed out to us – exterior walls made of whatever materials they could get their hands on – wood, brick, stone, cement, etc. Also it was explained to us that houses could only be a particular size & shape!

Wedding Day in Korycin!

Korycin is a beautiful village.  We were welcomed with open arms, trays of sweet breads, homemade cherry wine & just a lot of love. We spent a couple nights in the hotel across the road from the village.

Before we had even signed in to register, the owner’s wife took us upstairs to sit in the sun room while she brought us coffee & a plates of sweets. This is how we were treated the two days we spent in this hotel. She let us know the next day that she had to go to town for appointment but she had breads for us and breakfast would be served by her husband, the owner.

For the day of the wedding, we moved to rooms reserved for us at the banquet hall for the after wedding party. The car, a leftover we were told of Russian occupation, was dressed to carry the bride & groom from the village to church back to this location later that day for the reception.

The Bride, the awesome car that picked up Bride & Groom to take them from home to church to reception here. The band in red in front of door followed the Bride & Groom from her parents home to church to reception. Awesome day and awesome Polish wedding to be a part.

Back to the bride’s family home, everyone was in attendance it seemed. The bride & groom rode in the little flower covered car driven by Jacek. Everyone had a seat in a particular car & we were off for the caravan drive thru the village before heading across the road to the church.  The polka players were walking in front of caravan playing polka music. You really had to see it to believe it.

We hadn’t gone maybe to the end of their street when a row of men closed the street off by standing across it. The Big Guy & I looked at each other like ‘what the heck is going on?’.  Then we saw Jacek jump out of the lead car with a bag. He gave each man a small bottle of liquor/vodka. They waved & parted to let the caravan thru. We go maybe one more street & there is a row of children standing across the street. Jacek gets out again, this time with a bag of candies, & gives each child a piece. They wave & part the way for caravan to drive thru. It was really quite cute & made everyone in the village a party to the wedding.

The wedding was beautiful! The church was beautiful. First wedding I’d been to where the bride & groom sat in chairs for part of the ceremony. The Bride & Groom were such a handsome pair. Mondo, how he came to the table! He had attended Polish classes back in Texas & was able to speak all vows in Polish during the whole wedding ceremony! Both of us were so impressed by Mondo’s love for Ania that he had learned Polish so he could communicate with her family & friends in their language. A big old Texas boy speaking Polish fluently….you had to be there.

Beautiful wedding in Poland.

The wedding was beautiful but then the party afterwards! The food just kept getting served. Every time I thought I couldn’t take another bite, more food was being served. The food kept coming way after midnight. Gallons of vodka on ice on every table. We like a glass of wine & I personally can appreciate a good whiskey & coke on ice but that night it was all about the vodka. My takeaway was Polish vodka is pretty darn good. I can’t even try to repeat any of the Polish/Russian salutes or tell you how many shots we drank but we ate, we danced, we laughed, & drank the night away. The Big Guy & I lasted til after 3 a.m. We were headed to our room when we got pulled back down to the dance floor for one more dance. I don’t know what time the party ended but we were told that normally these parties last for up to three days!

A Little Sight Seeing After the Wedding Day

Storks Are Real!

Storks in Poland are real!
Storks in Poland are real!

After the wedding day & until our flight left, Jacek was the perfect tour guide. He gave us the grand tour through the Polish beautiful green countryside. Even the huge forest were amazing backdrops to the quaint farms. This is where I found out that storks are a real bird! Yes, I truly thought storks were the ‘cartoon’ birds that delivered babies in so many of those children’s books. Imagine my surprise when I asked Jacek what were those tall poles with platforms on the top of them used for? Most had what looked like a pile of large sticks on them. “Oh, those are stork nests”. What? Storks are real? He continued to tell us that in order to keep farms from burning down because of the storks building their huge nest of sticks in the chimneys that they started erecting these pillar post & platforms for the birds to build their nests! There were indeed huge storks nesting or standing on some of the platforms.

Jewish Settlement

Hand carved art piece carved while we watched in Jewish settlement in Poland.

We were able to visit a small Jewish Settlement to view the hundreds of archives depicting Jewish history. At the entrance to the walled settlement an elderly gentleman was carving pieces of wood into figure heads. This is the one he carved & signed for us while we waited.

Floating Lithuania Border

In the countryside, Jacek took us to an old stone guard tower still standing with what I imagined was a moat at one time around it. Attached to this tower was an old barb wire fence with sign on it stating country border of Lithuania.

an old guard station we came up on a walk in Poland complete with drawbridge & dried up moat & floating boarder line.
An old guard station we saw on a walkabout in Poland.

Bison

The European Bison are a huge point of pride for the Polish. We were able to visit the Białowieża Forest to see some of the huge beast first hand! They are also prominently on label of Zubrowka Biala Vodka – a bottle of which we brought home with us. This vodka is famous for the bison grass blade in every bottle. It is a very nice vodka.

What We Didn’t Have Time To See & Would Love to Go Back to See

Poland should be on everyone’s must see list. There really is so many things to see & it definitely takes more than one week to see it all. It is a beautiful country & the people were awesome! The history so full that I couldn’t even begin to scratch the surface in a blog but I hope you venture to some of the links for further reading.

Places we would love to see when we return to Poland would include Krakow, Auschwitz Memorial & Warsaw Jewish Ghetto Tour [considered “to be one of the most haunting and historically poignant places to visit in all of Poland”] to name just a few. Old Town Warsaw Market & the Bialystok market centers are well worth another trip!

One Day In Paris – Top Five Sights On My Itinerary!

One day in Paris, The City of Lights, to see anything I desired. It was only for a day so I had a choice of my top three sights I wanted to see. Guess what? We crammed in five sights on an awesome one day itinerary – really – basically fast trotting it from sight to sight. I had only dreamed of what I would do, what I would see – if I could stroll the Paris sidewalk, go up the Eiffel Tower!! Well, my dream came true totally unexpected at the end of a work project in the U.K.

What would you do? If you had the opportunity to spend one whole day in the beautiful city of Paris, would you turn it down? Heck no, not if you are in your right mind! I jumped at the chance.

What if you could choose whether to spend a day driving the English countryside looking at castles or check out Paris?  I was given that choice!  Honestly, I would have liked to have done both but I only had one free day before catching my Sunday flight back to the U.S. Paris it is!

Background on the Trip

I was in the UK – just outside of London – for a work assignment back in the late 1990s.   It had been a long tough mind-numbing six days of meetings.  Our conference was in the same hotel we were all staying in so most days it felt as if I was walking from meeting to bed – then back to the next meeting. We would occasionally break just to get out of hotel to stretch our legs and ‘wake up’ a bit. You get where I’m going…very tough week. Dinners were late – so this girl was pooped by end of week.

It sounds as if I may be complaining but I am not. Since this was work I had no out of pocket expenses & my first international travel was free! What’s not to love about that?

Some of my favorite memories of the UK during that week

  • Break outs from meetings to grab coffee & muffins.
  • Architecture was awesome. Our hotel from the side walk seemed to be a row of endless white buildings.  Very tv’ish.
  • Walking inside what could only be described as a huge rock walled dungeon, we were informed that this very place was – centuries past – where people were beheaded! Very ‘Games of Thrones’ feel.
  • Learning very quickly that you really need to use those ‘eyes in the back of your head’ for crossing streets. Those English drivers.. Seriously. LOL!  Thinking back on it now it probably is no worse than Texas drivers during rush hour.
  • Watching a row of very young blue uniformed school children on their way to school. Just freaking adorable. Picture a row of baby ducks following Momma Duck down the sidewalk….

By Friday afternoon, the majority of the group had decided on a countryside castle tour for Saturday, our one free day, before we hit our flights Sunday back to their various home countries.   Ok, that sounded like it would definitely be interesting but would we be spending more time driving than actually walking and sightseeing castles?  That is what was running thru my head but hey I’m a team player…

I Get to Go to Paris!!

Later that Friday evening, a couple of the attorneys were breaking off from the group & discussing their plans for the following day. The senior of the two was fluent in French as he had spent a lot of time in France in the past and was keen to cross over to Paris for his ‘free’ day.  By time I entered the conversation, they had decided it would be a day in Paris instead of the castle tour.

Paris landmarks

They asked if I had ever been to Paris? Nope! I was beyond happy to have made it to the UK! Then they asked if I wanted that I could go with them to Paris? No pressure, just be in hotel lobby at 6:30 a.m. the next morning. I was awake, dressed & waiting on them! LOL. We took a taxi to train station and we were off!

Name three sights you want to see in Paris? We had just made to our seats on The Chunnel when Joe asked what three things would I like to see in Paris on our day trip?  Off the top of my head I spouted Eiffel Tower, The Louvre Museum & Jim Morrison’s gravesite. Yes, I really did say Morrison’s grave…Joe explained to me that Morrison’s burial site would not be conducive to our limited time-frame. I’m cool with that! Eiffel Tower & Louvre were definitely doable. This would be our goal for Paris sight seeing that day.

One Day Itinerary for Paris – We Squeezed in a Must See of Five Sights!

1] The Channel Train [‘The Chunnel’]

We initiated our trip to Paris from the Waterloo International Train Station. We would be crossing on The Channel Train [also called The Chunnel]! I can’t tell you what we paid for tickets in 1997 but check here for present ticket prices.

A few facts about The Chunnel

  • It is the longest undersea tunnel in world, listed as one of ‘The Seven Wonders of the Modern World’ at a length of 31.4 miles with 23.5 of those miles underwater!  I remember thinking if it would feel different being undersea? No, really could not even tell and the trip took no time at all & we were pulling into the Gare du Nord train station.
  • The first idea of this under-water tunnel was put on paper in 1802!
  • It took 13,000 workers from both sides of the Channel to coordinate the building of The Chunnel. I remember watching a documentary years ago showing the building of The Chunnel, both sides working to meet in the middle.  Pretty amazing work!
  • The tunnel actually consists of three tunnels! Read here for more info on The Chunnel. https://www.eurostar.com/us-en/travel-info/the-chunnel.

2] Champs Elysees & Arc de Triomphe

Once we exited the Train at the Gare du Nord station in Paris, we headed for the Eiffel Tower but first  The Champs Elysees. It is the most well known avenue in Paris and gives you access to the Arc de Triomphe.  Since we were on a time crunch all we could do was check it out as we passed. If time had been available, it would have been awesome to book a hotel and spend a few days experiencing Paris but not this trip. I would have loved to stroll through some of the shops on The Champs Elysees or have been able to buy a ticket to go to top of the Arc de Triomphe for the view but, again, time was not on our side. For tour info check here.

The park connected with The Champs Elysees is just gorgeous. At one point there was a tall white statute on the left side of the path. The statute was set on a small stand maybe a foot high. At the base of the statute was a basket for monetary donations. I turned to Joe & Pat, my co-workers, & said something like ‘wow it must be safe for them to leave an open money basket in the open at the base of a statute with all these people walking by’! Joe chuckled. Then I noticed, as I stood staring at what I thought was a stone statute,  a bead of sweat hanging off the end of his nose. It was a man dressed in white with total white body makeup. Awesome! I’ve seen live statutes in Las Vegas but they’ve got nothing on this guy.

Along this walk I had my first experience with French public restrooms. I felt like a cow being herded thru metal fence to the toilets… Let me just say I was super happy that I had a hand full of coins so the gatekeeper I dealt with could take what she needed that allowed me in. The lady in front of me evidently only paid for one person, not for her child. The gatekeeper had the mom in tears until she realized that she had not paid enough coin for the daughter to use the bathroom.  I’m sure they’ve changed this process to the better by now?

3] Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is awesome.! We went as high as we were allowed & the views were amazing!  Did I mention my camera was at the hotel packed in my suitcase? Please take a camera! It is on my bucket list to get The Big Guy to the Eiffel Tower with me when we have an opportunity. Really no words for it! I would love to see it at night with all the lights on!

Check that off our to see list for the day! Thank goodness I was smart enough to wear good walking shoes that day because now we were hustling to our next ‘stop’. We took a short taxi ride just to get us a little closer to our afternoon adventure but first lunch!

4] Almost Any Sidewalk Café Will Do!

Coffe croissantEiffel

If for nothing else than to enjoy coffee & a chocolate croissant, you must take a break & enjoy the ambience of people watching in Paris! During the time, we were in Paris “Mad Cow” signs were on all the menus & beef was not to be found. I was told horse was a substitute but I can’t swear that was true? The menus were in French so Joe ordered our lunch. I made him promise not order any ‘horse’ meat for me. I ate the salad but couldn’t bring myself to even taste the piece of dark meat on the plate. A pretty quick lunch & then off again on our trek to next stop – The Louvre!

5] The Louvre Museum

Talk about curb appeal! The first thing you see is the huge glass pyramid & pond in front of The Louvre Museum. So cool! Again, the pond made me think of the movies where the children are sailing boats across?

On the day we arrived The Mona Lisa was on display & one of the first things you saw. Check out these facts about Mona Lisa. Now I have never considered myself an art lover BUT The Mona Lisa in The Louvre! Who hasn’t heard of that piece of art. I have been pretty stoked several times when I have been able to say “oh sure, I saw the Mona Lisa at the Louvre”. LOL. I know, quit showing off.

There are Guide Tours for the Museum & I would highly suggest using one as it is not impossible to get lost & time really does seem to just fly. We had set a two-hour time frame to meet at the front entrance of the museum & then we would be heading back to train station.

We knew our time would be tight but if we kept to our time schedule, we would be fine long as we caught the train departure back to the UK. Well, of course, Pat didn’t show at the agreed time! We were starting to worry that we would miss the train when he finally showed up! Between you and me, I think he found a comfy chair and took a cat nap!  I think a few swear words may have been uttered by Joe once Pat eventually came walking around a corner. We were off & running as we still had one more tiny but very important stop to make.

The Perfect Ending to a Day in Paris

The famous Hemingway Bar – just to say you did. Now the others knew how to order a drink in France but failed to share that with me. I ordered a whiskey & coke on ice like I would have done in the US. What the bartender set down in front of me was a tall clear glass – no ice, no coke, straight whiskey! The guys just chuckled when I looked at them…..well, I couldn’t let it go to waste so… drinks went down & then it really was a fast trot back to the train station!

We made our train but I can’t lie, I think we all fell asleep for the short ride back to the UK train station.  The end of an awesome day – my one day in Paris! Man I wish I had not forgotten my camera but…one day, I hope to take The Big Guy back.

International Vacation Travel to Phuket, Thailand was Awesome!

What a memory to wake up to – I woke up this morning with Phuket on my mind…

Our second international vacation travel destination to Phuket, Thailand was awesome! The Big Guy had been working in the Middle East for a bit now & I felt pretty confident that The Land of Smiles would be just the cherry on top for this trip. The oldest of the girls, Carrie, a former Navy seaman, had told us if we ever got the chance we should put Phuket on our vacation list. Thank you Carrie! Thailand was amazing!

I’ll just warn you now, you will hear Thailand come up in a lot of future blogs. So many fun memories. This one particular one was hilarious but could have been so embarrassing!

Our room is on the left in this building. From this view it is hidden by the trees. Middle floor, metal railings.

This is a partial view of the Best Western Superlai Resort & Spa where we stayed about 30 minutes outside of Phuket town. This is a view looking up to the hotel from end of pier when the tide is going out. To the right of this pier was the beach and bar area opening out to the beautiful water. The hotel pool, dining, other individual rooms are in another building to the left of the building in above photo. Each room had its own semi private deck that you could sit out in the a.m. and have coffee or just enjoy the sun or stars at night.

View from our room!

The Big Guy & I were down at the bar area chatting up with Mr. Yuk, the bartender & hotel entertainment planning our excursion for the day. I posted pics of Mr. Yuk with The Big Guy in photos on our F/B page. The Hotel was very new and preparing for season to begin in a couple weeks. We totally lucked out being there just pre-season [you know, lower rates, low capacity, etc] so we were really had hands on ‘handling’ from day one. AWESOME! In his spare time, we were able to go out to an island on Mr. Yuk’s boat just to swim. I’m reliving it as I type…so much fun. Oh, and the first weekend at the hotel there was a large asian wedding at the pool area…gorgeous.

Back to the story, The Big Guy & I were down at the beach taking in all the beauty when I turned around to check out view to hotel. I could not believe my eyes. Now if someone else had been and about and looked up at the hotel they would have been scratching their heads for sure. I was just speechless when I turned to the culprit standing next to me and pointed to the hotel. Evidently, [and I really don’t know how he did it without me seeing it] he had hand washed our undies and hung them from on the deck to dry! I really think he let me go to breakfast first so he could run back in and wash and hang them. Yep, luckily he had hung them so that they would not fly off in the breeze. He said he was use to washing his own undies and didn’t want to bother the housekeepers [who later let us know they could do our laundry.]

Needless to say, on trips after this, I kept a close eye on him and the laundry!

A Return Trip to Thailand is Most Assuredly in Our Future

After writing this blog, I checked both the Resort & Booking.com for prices. It is very affordable. Prices at 55-67$ per night is good money spent. King bed with sea view & full breakfast included. I saw that they also recommended you select free cancellation which included being able to pay at hotel! The hotel was gorgeous & the staff was awesome. Really happy.

English Language

I read in one of the reviews of the Resort that language was manageable? We had no problem whatsoever. One of the employees explained to us that in Thailand if you want to have a good job you have to speak English so they are very happy to learn.

The locals in the village below the hotel were so patient with us even though very very few of them spoke English. We had picked up some short phrases from hotel staff that really gave us an edge. We were able to shop in the open market & had no issues buying anything. Locals were just very patient with us when we tried to speak Thai! Such a lovely culture

Thailand Was Amazing But Does It Deserve Another Trip?

The Plan is Set – Will it Be Back to Thailand?

Thailand was amazing but does it deserve another trip or should we just mark that country as ‘done’ on our Bucket List for future trips? We keep going back & forth. Will we make another trip to the Land of Smiles? We just are not sure at this moment but, bottom line, we loved Thailand & it holds a very special place in our hearts.

We had a great time in Phuket but I think when & if we go back to Thailand it will be probably to the Chiang Mai region. The Elephant Nature Park is located there. It is dedicated to elephant rescue & rehabilitation & I am all over that!! Being able to volunteer for a small price sounds good to me & I am really feeling a need to get my hands on an elephant. Ha. There are quite a few Elephant tours, sanctuaries, etc where you can feed & bathe elephants so we shall see! I haven’t told The Big Guy about this particular day plan but I think he will be all in. LOL.

Back to business at hand, so for my first notebook dated 2017, our “To Do” list was short. Make a list of countries we were interested in visiting. I’ll be posting about those countries & why we feel the need to visit them on the ‘Where Will We Land Next’ page. I’ll admit our first list was pretty short keeping Thailand still at top of list.

At some point, I did some online to research & found others who had moved and their experiences. I found American expats living in Thailand and signed on to their YouTube channels. This also allowed us to widen our views as to multiple towns we might want to visit or eventually live in. Following blogs, YouTube channels, etc are awesome ways to gain insight from that person’s personal experiences & how they handled any hiccups.

Bottom line though, if you really want to get to the down and dirty on entering a foreign country [to you] check out the Embassy requirements online.

When we had visited Thailand in 2008 it was purely for a break for The Big Guy and vacation for us to reconnect after not seeing each other for about six months.  Long hot days for sure. Temps were probably close to 90-95 everyday with a little rain here & there but we had plenty of hours in the day to do our walkabouts. We were able to go motor scooting across one island & caught rides on longtail boats with villagers, etc.

One of the hi-lights was our visit to the Phuket Pearl store! We were on an awesome tour and learned all about pearls. Of course, we shopped and were able to hand pick pearls for the girls back home. Later on we were able to see a pearl farm at one of the village boat stops. Below is photo from The Phuket Pearl Farm.

Wonderful sights to see – the island where part of the James Bond movie was filmed. It really was amazing how islands just seem to pop up out of the water. We saw beautiful water falls seeming to shoot out of the side of forested mountains, rubber tree plantations… We couldn’t see enough! We still want to see more!

On one of our evening walks, we came across this village Thai boxing club practicing. They tried to get The Big Guy in ring but it was a no go on his part. LOL.

We will discuss our ‘how did we get to this point’ again but…

While we were sightseeing all these beautiful spots traveling Thailand we also saw how the people were still reeling from the devastation left by the Dec. 6, 2004 tsunami. Thailand was just one of the countries to be hit.  Beaches, hotels, homes close to water and the loss of life. Thailand alone # 4800+ deaths, 8500 +/- injured, 4500 Dec. 26, 2007 – in a matter of just over an hour.
